Ottonians
By papal invitation, the German king Otto I came to Italy and ended the constant alternation of power. “Otto I the Great”, who ruled Germany from 936 as king “Otto I der Grosse” was crowned Holy Roman emperor in 962, which he ruled until his death in 973.
Otto I was the son of Henry I; he inherited the Duchy of Saxony (Sachsen) and ascended the German throne upon his father’s death in 936.

Shortly after 1000 the Ottonian dynasty fell, leaving in the north a vacuum of power which was later exploited by the local landowners and town merchants. Meanwhile, local insurrections started weakening the Saracens’ hold on the southern coastal cities.
